For my first vacation of the new decade I chose to spend a month backpacking in Tasmania, that large island south of Australia. This was not by chance, but a fortunate side effect of returning from yet another field season in Antarctica. The plan was for Sharon to meet me there early in the year, and although the plan failed, we still arrived in Australia on Jan 1st. 2010.

Our travels began with a few days in Hobart where we caught the tail end of the famous Sydney to Hobart sailboat race. Then we visited Maria Island National Park where we tested out our camping gear in reasonably controlled conditions. This was followed by a brief stay in Bay of Fires, and after that we continued to our main goal: the Overland Track. We returned via Melbourne, where we coincidentally arrived while the Australian Open was finishing, so we had to attend. There was also a classic car show nearby. A well-rounded trip. It is difficult to impress me with beautiful places, but Tasmania certainly did it. No wonder a good part of it is considered World Heritage Area. Go there if you can.

Thanks to Sharon for contributing some great pictures as noted in the captions.
